IMPORTANT: 201 KAR 23:075​ outlines continuing education requirements for social work licensees, providers and sponsors.​

Continuing Education Credit​ Approval

For continuing education credit approval, apply here if you have attended a conference or taken a CE course that is relevant to the practice of social work but has NOT been approved by: 1) the KY Board of Social Work, or 2) one of the board’s PREAPPROVED Providers or Sponsors. Note: Program content and speaker resumes are required.

Each licensee must complete a Kentucky Social Work Ethics course during each renewal period.​​

  1. The Kentucky Social Work Ethics course required for renewal MUST be approved by the Kentucky Board of Social Work; and
  2. The CE certificate MUST have a KBSW-ETHICS Approval No. on the certificate.

Required Continuing Education Courses

Kentucky Social Work Ethics

  • Must specifically cover the Kentucky Code of Ethical Conduct established in 201 KAR 23:080
  • KBSW-Ethics Approval number on the certificate of completion
  • Three (3) credit hours repeated every renewal period
  • Take online or in person​

Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse Training

  • During the three (3) year renewal period following initial licensure
  • Three (3) hours of domestic violence related training courses
  • Once you complete this course during your first license renewal, it does not have to be repeated
  • Take online or in ​person

Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma

  • One and one-half (1.5) hours covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma as defined in KRS 620.020
  • Must be repeated at least one time every six (6) years
  • Take online or in ​person​

Suicide Prevention Training

Now required for social workers and other qualified mental health professionals.

  • By July 2016, each licensee must complete a board approved training program on suicide assessment, treatment, and management as required by KRS 210.366(2)​
  • Minimum of six (6) credit hours
  • Must be repeated at least one time every six (6) years
  • Take online or in person

ELECTIVE - KENTUCKY LCSW SUPERVISORS ONLY

  • Board-approved six (6) credit hour course
  • Must be repeated every renewal period to maintain supervisor status
  • Must take online or in person
  • You may submit your request to supervise online

CSWs UNDER LCSW SUPERVISION

CSWs who seek an approved contract for the practice of clinical social work must complete a 1 hour CEU. Click the link below

Note: Both providers and sponsors must be approved by KBSW before providing any continuing education programs. Application(s) must be submitted at least thirty (30) days in ad​vance of the commencement of the program.

Qualifications for Kentucky Ethics Course Presenters

The Board requires that at a minimum, presenters for the KY Ethics course shall have the following qualification(s):

  • Degree in social work
  • Licensed in KY as a social worker
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Kentucky Social Work Code of Ethical Code of Conduct
  • No current, past or unresolved disciplinary actions
  • Knowledge of ethical theory and practice competence

Qualifications for Kentucky LCSW Supervision Course Presenters

At a minim​um, presenters for the KY LCSW Supervision course shall have the following qualifications:

  • Degree in social work
  • Licensed in KY as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with current status as a Board-approved LCSW Supervisor
  • No current, past or unresolved disciplinary actions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the KY Law and Regulations Related to Social Work Demonstrated Knowledge of 201 KAR 23:070 Qualifying Education and Experience under Supervision​

Course Approval

Courses that are established to meet the supervision requirement must be on the supervisory practices and methods for licensed clinical social workers relating to the requirements in KRS Chapter 335 and 201 KAR 23:070. This course must be presented face-to-face in person before a live presenter and must be a minimum of 3 hours in length. All Ethics and Supervision Courses require approval by the Kentucky Board of Social Work. Please be detailed in the content and qualifications of the instructors when submitting these courses for approval. Courses on Supervision must be presented by a licensee who currently is a board approved LCSW Supervisor. The Ethics for Renewal Requirement shall be acquired in the area of the social work code of ethics as established by 201 KAR 23:080 and must be presented by an approved provider and must be a minimum of 3 hours in length.​
